Thailand has lots of special days, often with observations done at the schools. There are a number of Buddhist holidays. There’s Thai Language Day. There’s Science Day. There’ Wai Kruu Day. And this month there’s Children’s Day and Teacher Day.
Children’s Day was last week and to celebrate, there was no school. Instead, at the local government office there was a big celebration with lots of dance performances by the kids, ice cream, raffles for a bike and other prizes and lots of candy and sweet snacks being handed out. Check out the pictures:
Yesterday was Teacher Day. I’m currently out of town attending a conference with my co-teacher so we celebrated Teacher Day by visiting temples in Chiang Mai. But from other volunteers I heard that it was another day with classes cancelled, merit making at temples and honoring the older teachers. Last year, as trainees, we honored our Thai language teachers with apples and other Thai snacks. Perhaps I’ll get to do this next year.
